UK creators sit in an awkward position post-Brexit: still benefiting from mature Stripe and broad platform support, but no longer inside EU VAT OSS and increasingly subject to separate rules for selling to EU customers. The UK creator economy is large, English-language-native, and well-served by every major US and EU platform. The friction is mostly tax-side rather than infrastructure-side.
VAT. UK VAT registration is required when turnover exceeds £90,000/year (current threshold as of 2026). Below that, you don't charge VAT but also can't reclaim it on business expenses. For sales to EU customers, you're now outside OSS and need to register for VAT in each country once you cross country-specific thresholds — or use a Merchant of Record platform (Gumroad, LemonSqueezy) that handles this for you.
Payout currency. Most platforms pay in GBP without FX cost via Stripe UK. Confirm the Stripe payout currency setting.
HMRC self-assessment. Creator income is self-employment income for HMRC purposes. Class 4 National Insurance and income tax both apply; expect to set aside ~30% of net for tax depending on your bracket.
