Germany is the largest EU creator market by population and has the strictest documentation requirements. Stripe Germany is mature, EU VAT One Stop Shop (OSS) handles cross-border digital sales for registered creators, and the Kleinunternehmerregelung lets creators under thresholds skip VAT entirely. But German tax authorities expect proper invoices with all required Pflichtangaben fields, and many US-built platforms generate invoices that don't meet those requirements.
VAT. The Kleinunternehmerregelung threshold rose in 2025 — confirm the current limit via your Steuerberater. Above it, you're collecting VAT and filing OSS quarterly. Platforms acting as MoR (Gumroad, LemonSqueezy) substantially simplify this. Pure platforms (Substack, Patreon, Beehiiv, Kit, Memberful) push compliance to you.
Invoice requirements. German law requires invoices with specific fields (Steuernummer or USt-IdNr, complete buyer info, sequential invoice number, etc.). Patreon's tax invoices are minimal; Stripe's hosted invoices are usually adequate; Substack provides receipts that may not satisfy German tax audits. For creators expecting any meaningful audit risk, MoR platforms or self-hosted (Ghost + manual invoicing) is the safer path.
Payout currency. EUR is native, no FX friction. SEPA bank transfers are standard.
